Eliock Castle

Set in the tranquil and beautiful setting of the Eliock Estate this charming guest accommodation is in one of the oldest buildings in South West Scotland namely Eliock Castle, but fear not although the north wing is the original castle building the guest suites are warm and cosy with all modern conveniences after an extensive and sensitiveconservation and restoration over the past eighteen months.

There has been a building be it a dwelling or fortification on this site for over a thousand years and the existing turret is dated from around 1548.The main house is a Georgian house built around a medieval castle and has changed it guise many times over the years.The history of the house and the surrounding area is fascinating with many links to famous events and names from the past such as Oliver Cromwell and the Admirable James Crichton who was born in the north wing of the castle.

Immerse yourself in the local in nature in this unspoilt environment where there are Foxes, Red Kites, Deer, Buzzard, Hares, Tawny Owls and Barn Owls and Golden Eagles all are seen regularly and there are a multitude of smaller birds such as swallows, flycatchers, tree creepers, woodcocks etc

Nearby there are many areas of outstanding beauty for example the Southern Upland Way, The Mennock Pass leading to Wanlockhead (the highest village in Scotland) both have a tradition of gold panning which takes place almost daily.Leadhills which boasts the oldest subscription library in the world.Not forgetting the historical Village of Sanquhar, which has a fascinating history and links with Mary Queen of Scots.Sanquhar village has an historic toll booth which houses the museum along with shops, and a couple of pubs, it also has ‘A’ the Airts’ an arts centre.Here you can find out all about the world famous Sanquhar knitting patterns dating back from the 1700’s which is produced here with lovely café for luncheon.Crawick Multiverse is just a couple of miles away as is Sanquhar golf course

Sanquhar Railway Station is 9 minutes from Elicok and a great asset to the town, whether you are coming from London, Paris or further afield.

There are many trains to Glasgow and further north and Carlisle and further southregularly throughout the week with connections to the west coast of Scotland.A pick up from Sanquar station can be arranged with notice.

If you are driving the nearest main carriageway is the A76 from Dumfries to Kilmarnock.

Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are just over an hour away by car.

The Castle has three suites.

Mary Queen of Scots The Ground Floor Suite (one bedroom)

Each suite has it’s own outside area be it a patio or balcony to sit and enjoy the views.

These luxury suites are set in glorious grounds, with three acres of wooded area and meadow land with a fresh water dipping pond and stunning pastoral views.

There are also extensive woodlands and walks nearby.
